Episode 54: The Love of Books Video

In this week’s episode of Life after Kids with Drs. Brooke and Lynne, we’re discussing the impact books can reading an have on you in midlife. We also talk about our favorite books!

It's one of our favorite topics of conversation.  It's something we talk about regularly...BOOKS & READING.

We can't wait to have this conversation with you in this week's episode of Life after Kids with Drs. Brooke, The Love of Books Video.

There's nothing like a good book to grow you as a person and open you to new ideas.  A great novel can be a form of stress relief as it entertains while transporting you to new places and teaching you life lessons.  Non-fictions are an exceptional way to learn and grow.  And then there's historical fictions, which are part novel/entertainment and part history lesson.  If you don't share our love of reading, don't write this conversation off yet. We have some simple bite-sized ways for you to fit reading into your life so you can reap it's benefits without it feeling like a chore.

When the kids were little, most of us found it hard to find time to read because we were so busy chasing after littles, and at the end of the day, we were exhausted (unless of course you read like us while nursing, LOL!)  But now there's more time to devote to reading and it's so much more productive than watching endless hours of tv.  So we have some tips to make reading easier and even more enjoyable, so you can get the most out of on of our favorite pastimes.

  • Set a goal for yourself at the start of the year for how many books you want to read so you're more intentional about reading, rather than wasting too much time scrolling on social media or watching tv.

  • Keep a book list in the notes section of your phone.  Add to the list when you hear about a good book and cross each book off as you finish reading it.

  • At the end of the year, go back to that list and recall the book and at least one thing it taught you

  • Choose audiobooks for heavier, deeper content that's more difficult to get through.  This is especially good for non ficiton.  You can listen in the car, while walking, while doing laundry, or even while getting ready in the morning.

  • Read novels at night to relax and prepare for sleep

  • Elin Hildebrand is a must for summer pool and beach reading!

Honestly, when it comes to books, there's never been one we've read that we didn't get at least one important thing from. And, timing is everything, so if there are books you've read in the past that you liked, consider revisiting them.  In this phase of life you, that book might speak to you differently and you may just learn something new.  Finally, if you're in "I wanna live my best life and make each day count" mode, consider reading "A Year of Yes" by Shonda Rhimes.  It's great motivation to live each day fully and vibrantly.  We talk about several of our other favorite books in this week's episode of Life after Kids with Drs. Brooke and Lynne, so don't forget to tune in by clicking the picture above!

You are the product of the people you spend time with and the books you read.
