Episode 60: The No Excuses Video

In this week’s episode of Life after Kids we’re discussing all the choices we can make to improve our health in midlife and the way we age. We’re also discussing why it’s so important to stop making excuses and stop playing the comparison game.

No matter how hard we try, there are some things we can't change. Things like the weather, the amount of time in a day, the past, and our genetic make up.

Fortunately for us, there are many things that we can change.  For example, we can change our health, the way we age, and the way we view ourselves.  So why do we decide not to do anything about our health or life and then compare ourselves to celebrities and other women we know, making excuses for ourselves like, "she got so lucky" or "I could do that too if I had her money" or "yeah, but she has great genes"  And, if we're not making excuses for ourselves, we often put down on people that are accomplishing things that we haven't tried or haven't been able to do in an effort to make ourselves feel better.  The excuses and the negativity might make us feel better in the short term, but in the long run this behavior isn't conducive to living a vibrant and fulfilled midlife.  We're discussing these topics and more in this week's episode of Life after Kids with Drs. Brooke and Lynne, The No Excuses Video.  As always, we've added a few highlights below:

  • Fear often stops us from making changes to our health and life.  We're worried about how much effort it will take, or afraid that we'll do all the work and still come up short.  We must push through our fear instead of playing the blame game.

  • Don't focus on what you can't currently control like your means, your circumstance, or your genetics.  Instead, focus on what you can control regarding your health, like how you move your body, what you eat, and stress management.  These have a huge impact on our health and aging

  • When you start to work on yourself and your health, expect push back and negativity from friends and even family.  As previously stated, it's not uncommon to put down on someone when they're actions are making you aware of what you aren't doing in your own life.

  • Take massive action with one thing that will improve your life starting today until it becomes a habit.  That one thing can change the course of your entire life

  • Everybody gets to decide how they want age and what they want to do with their body.  Whatever choice you make for yourself, don't judge other women for choosing to age differently than you.

If you needed to hear this conversation today because you've been making excuses, telling yourself things like "it's hopeless", or "I can't do it" or "it's too late", please hear us when we say (with nothing but love in our heart for you), ENOUGH.  It's time to stop making excuses.  We're not getting any younger.  The time is now.  Everything you do today is setting you up for what life is going to look like 10, 20, 30, even 40 years down the road.

We hope you're feeling our sense of urgency, but if you need more motivation, click the picture above to watch The No Excuses Video.  And remember, you do have agency over your body, your health, aging, and what your life will look like in the future.  Whatever you're going to get started on, choose it, and do it now!

You only have control over 3 things in your life- the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and THE ACTION YOU TAKE.
